After 52 years, Frank Crary (Recon Platoon, Delta Company 1/12th) is recognized for his heroic actions on April 7, 1966. The nations second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) was awarded by the Army to Frank Crary. Details of Franks actions may be seen below.
The Army went "all out" for the awards ceremony. The DSC was pinned on Frank by MG Robert Walters at Ft. Huachuca on 22 May 2018. Other awards, due to Frank but never received, were presented by LTC Andrew Kiser, current Commander of the 1/12th Battalion and his CSM Shelly Jenkins. Both travelled from FT. Hood TX for the ceremony.
It was an impressive and well executed ceremony with hundreds of active duty members of the Army present, as well as many press outlets.
Senator John McCain, who endorsed and facilitated the award submission, and pushed for the approval of the Defense Authorization Act of which Frank Crary's DSC award was a part, was unable to attend because of his health. We sincerely thank him for all he did and pray for him during a difficult time.
This award marks the culmination of a five year effort to obtain recognition for Frank, a recognition long overdue. It also brings a satisfying closure to those that served with Frank in the Recon Platoon in Vietnam.
