Delta had their "Baptism of Fire" during operation "Shiny Bayonet". There they engaged Main Force Viet Cong units in mid October. On Nov 1, 1965 they had their first contact with the NVA. The NVA were planning on cutting Vietnam in half at the Central Highlands. Delta Company made heavy contact with the NVA at an NVA field Hospital in the Chu Pong-Ia Drang area. It would become a major encounter at LZ XRAY, just two weeks later.
